All normal venues are within 5 miles of the Centre. The Centre itself is surrounded by remote moorland near Alston, Cumbria with immediate access to the fell.AALA Accredited Activities Open Canoeing - Inland Water i.e. Laker/Reservoir/River (BCU start testing can also be undertaken) Rock Climbing/Abseiling - Local Craggs Hill Walking & Mountaineering Mountain Biking - summer conditions only (Mountain Bike Proficiency Testing) and Mine Exploration - Underground Exercises

We offer high adventure summer activities and winter is not a problem but activities need to be modified at times -
the following can be added:
Skiing - adjacent fell or local tows
Snow Activities - sledging, igloos, snowholes
Team Challenge - underground in the mines
Or simply experience the driving snow from the comfort of a portable group shelter.
Our Centre provides all specialist clothing and equipment including waterproof tops and trousers, boots / wellies and rucksacks.
Insurance
The Centre holds a Public Liability Insurance of £5,000,000.
Personal Accident and Cancellation Insurance can be obtained should you require it.
Open Day
Your attendance at our free Group Leaders Open Day will enable you to visit our Centre and meet some of the staff. You can sample a range of outdoor pursuits and observe our development work.
Whilst here there will be the opportunity to explore the area and visit a local attraction. Alston Moor is described as “ England’s Last Wilderness”. It offers a wealth of opportunities for environmental, historical and cultural studies as well as adventurous activities.
The Centre prides itself on its flexibility and ability to cater to the needs of groups. We would welcome this opportunity to discuss your requirements.

Princes Trust Volunteers
- Learn about themselves and learn about the group

- Practical planning, effective use of resources and time management
Whilst our courses are flexible and tailored to the needs of the group, the outline programme has been developed with a number of Prince's Trust groups.
The course is designed to enable the group to:
Sixth Form Personal Development
Our Sixth Form Personal Development Courses provide opportunities over and above the rigours of academic studies. This is a valuable opportunity for high adventure summer activities as well as winter.The course focuses on problem solving tasks and outdoor based initiative exercises with the element of outdoor activities built in. It aims to help those who wish to develop to gain a deeper understanding of their potential and abilities, and to improve their understanding of others. This builds their confidence in their strengths and qualities which they can go on to apply throughout life.
The course is designed to enable the group to:
- Improve / increase self awareness and self confidence
- Develop a positive attitude with which to approach the world of employment
- Find out hidden talents and strengths
- Develop themselves further
- Overcome and solve problems
- Work effectively as part of a team
The Centre is able to offer courses for the above and for Canoe Safety Tests Training and Assessment. Alternatively the Centre is available for self catering / self programming for Canoe Clubs who may wish to use us just as an accommodation provider
Situated on top of the Pennines, our centre has easy access to both placid water and white-water canoeing in the Lake District, Northumberland and Durham.
Our nearest rivers are:
- South Tyne (Grade II) *
- Upper South Tyne (Grade II +) *Needs rain. Good fun! On our doorstep.
- North Tyne (Grade III)
- Eden (Grade III) Clear water, sparkling rapids, towering red sandstone cliffs
- Tees (Grade IV) Windy, rocky. Frequent rapids and a 13' waterfall to shoot
- Allen (Grade IV) Needs plenty of rain. Worth waiting for!
- *Grade II is suitable for novices provided they are with a competent leader.
- Grade III and IV are suitable for more experienced paddlers only.
- Many other rivers are near enough for a day trip from our centre, including rivers such as the (Nith Grade IV)

The Centre is able to offer various Outdoor Based Team Building Courses and environmental outdoor education programs for kids and adults, tailored to meet your requirements.
